In the below picture (taken from a part of NASA's Curiosity's Rover Highest Resolution Panorama [1]) it seems to show large chunks of gold clearly visible on the surface of Mars. If spectral analysis of the image confirms that it is indeed gold, it would seem that gold would be a resource initial colonizers of mars can add to their list of available resources and plan accordingly.
